Second DualSPHysics Users Workshop

At the beginning of December four employees of the cooperation project laundry care had the possibility to travel to Manchester, to the Second DualSPHysics Users Workshop. It was four us a task to catch up on the state of affairs of the science in SPH and to establish industry-specific contacts. Moreover, there was an important meeting with the VR-system manufacturer Virtalis.

DualSPHysics is an open-source flow solver, based on the method Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics which is already used by thousands of operators. The objective of the developers is "the simulation of free surface flows in which approaches by Euler are difficult to apply." The flow solver is primarily developed by the universities of Manchester (England) and Vigo (Spain).

From 6th to 7th December the Second DualSPHysics Users Workshop took place in the University of Manchester. It was a coming together of professors and students, operators and developers as well as interested scientists from different sectors of simulation and animation. The presentations ranged from students who gave lectures on the results of their degree theses to developers who presented new implementations about the software or scientists who apply DualSPHysics in order to solve engineering problems. Thus, a student presented the impacts of fluid flows on sediments whereas a scientist investigated the construction of dams to optimally protect them from floods.

The breaks and the excellent dinner provided the opportunity to exchange with other participants and to declare our field of activity in SPH. Thereby, the main demanding goal was to display the wash process in the washing machine.

At the end of the workshop, the future additions of the software were pointed out. These may in particular include the implementation of a variable resolution and the research on new approaches for boundary conditions. With these addition it will be possible to shorten even more the time of calculation and to enable a fluid flow on the simulation domain.

Furthermore, it turned out the possibility to arrange a meeting with developers of Virtalis GmbH in Manchester, one of the leading providers of the world concerning Virtual Reality solutions. Approaches should be found to represent our flow results in Virtual Reality. First results could be admired by visitors of Inauguration of the Beuth Cave on the 3rd February 2017 at the Beuth University for Technology in Berlin.

As we are currently researching on issues such as inlet and outlet conditions and adaptive resolution in SPH it was very interesting to come together in conversation with the leading scientists in this field and to compare the knowledge with our research.
